What is perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory facial skin diseae, characteristic by rash around mouth (periorally).

Who suffers from this disease?

This disease usually I affects 20-40 y.o. females, however, older than 40 y.o. women, children and, in very rare cases, men, may also suffer from this disease.

What causes this disease?

Specific cause of this disease is not fully determined yet. It is believed that improper or rather frequent use of cosmetic moisturising creams, fluoridised toothpaste, UV rays or use of hormone medications have a great impact on emerging of the disease. Local medications which, consist of hormones, also may cause this disease.

What are the symptoms of the perioral dermatitis?

Usually the skin around the mouth (periorally) becomes red, a number of red papules, nodules or pustules of a few millimetres in size can be seen in this area. The rash may emerge and spread up to cheek or eye-lid skin. If not treated, the disease becomes chronic.

How is perioral dermatitis treated?

Treatment of perioral dermatitis requires great patience. The disease causes discomfort due to its aesthetic look and heals-up significantly slowly. It is important stop using moisturising creams. If the disease was caused by local hormonal medication, it is necessary as soon as possible stop using them. Local anti-inflammatory preparations are to prescribed to treat perioral dermatitis. If local treatment is ineffective , oral medication are to be prescribed.

What is unique about the disease treatment at GK Clinic?

How many procedures do I need to treat perioral dermatitis?

Usually one procedure is sufficient. Already after a couple of weeks the symptoms of disease get better. If not full effect of treatment is observed, the procedure is to be repeated after 2 – 4 weeks.

How long lasts the procedure?

Is the procedure painful and how the skin looks after the procedure?

The procedure is not painful, the treatment is safe. After the procedure there may be a skin redness, which fully disappears within 24 hours.

What should I avoid after the procedure?

It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure (including solariums) some weeks before and after the procedure. After the procedure during sunny period sun protection cream must be applied on the skin.
