Scalp skin biopsy

Scalp skin biopsy

What is the skin biopsy?

Scalp skin biopsy is a procedure, when skin tissue is taken for further histological examination. The doctor using special biopsy needle cuts out a 2 – 4 skin patch, which is microscope tested. Biopsy is carried out under local anaesthesia, therefore the procedure is not painful.

When it is necessary to perform the skin biopsy?

Scalp skin biopsy is carried out to specify the diagnosis of scalp rashes of unknown origin or in case of scarring baldness (alopecias). Scalp rashes or baldness areas can occur due to different reasons, e.g.:

  • infectious skin diseases (fungal, bacterial or viral);
  • autoimmune disease (skin erithema nodosum, red lichen);
  • injuries or burns.
