What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an acquired skin disease, whose specific feature is white skin patches. 1-2 per cent of people suffer from this disease. Multiple different size white patches arise in the skin. Vitiligo affects different parts of body. This is not dangerous, not transmissible, however psychologically and cosmetically depressing skin condition.

How does vitiligo develop?

Specific cause of this disease is not fully defined yet. Our days it is thought to be an autoimmune disease. This means that our organism produces the substances that destroy our own skin cells, which produce skin pigment.

What kind of laboratory tests and procedures are carried out in GK clinic?

Dermatologist will prescribe some blood tests, because it is believed, that this illness may be related with other autoimmune illnesses.

What is the course of vitiligo disease?

The course of the disease differ with each person. In the beginning, very small white patches may arise, which later may expand, merge into bigger areas or disappear.

How is this disease treated in GK Clinic?

Currently the most effective method of virtiligo treatment is phototherapy. Previously this disease used to be treated using PUVA, however the recent clinical studies show that the most effective vitiligo treatment method is with UVB-311 nm rays. In our GK Clinic we have modern Photo Dermatological Centre in which the patients with vitiligo, are successfully treated with Waldmann phototherapy devices. In GK Clinic phototherapy treatment is successfully combined with local medication.

How long lasts the treatment?

The procedures are performed two to four times per week. The treatment requires patience, because it lasts three to six months. Since the GK Clinic is located in the centre of the city, this must be an ideal location for very busy people, who after the procedure, which lasts up to 5 minutes, can immediately go back to their work.

How effective is vitiligo treatment?

Approximately in 60-70 per cent of patients vitiligo patches reduce in size or completely disappear.
